In leading the way to the three points the newcomers to the squad in Crystal Dunn and Rose Lavelle put on a show, with not only some impressive dribbling abilities but also scoring the goals in the matches.
Dunn continues to make history in the NWSL as she has scored against 13 different NWSL clubs. Some of the other impressive numbers for Crystal is the fact that she also has 39 goals in her regular season career and is tied for 14th with current Utah head coach Amy Rodriguez in the league’s all-time rankings.
Dunn shared these thoughts with 1495Sports.com on the goal scoring opportunity:
There was a complete team performance from Juan Carlos Amoros‘ Club but being able to see the members of the U.S. Women’s National team continue to gain confidence and the ability to score goals at Red Bull Arena is something that most fans within Harrison were looking forward too since the duo signed on with the club.
Those in attendance at Red Bull Arena also got to see the triumphant return of McCall Zerboni to the franchise, as the Midfielder made her first appearance since suffering a season-ending injury on August 19, 2023.
Seeing Zerboni back on the pitch is something of a reward to herself and her teammates, as they saw how hard she worked to get back to doing what she loves and inspiring the next generation of soccer fans.
Dunn had this to say on the return of Zerboni to the roster, “We have celebrated McCall up into this moment, and I think it just speaks to her as a person, as a teammate and as a competitor. Every day, we see her working hard, lifting the team up on days that I know are difficult for her, whether it’s a setback with her progression or just, you know, an off day, she is somebody that gives so much to the environment. Seeing her dress today was amazing, and then seeing her step onto the field and doing the things that she has always done in this league, I think it’s so incredible. It is amazing to know her, to be able to now play with her, and I just know her journey hasn’t always been easy, today was such a special moment, and I’m just happy as a teammate that I was able to be there celebrating her.”
Having McCall back on the squad is going to be one of the many keys to the success of the Gotham FC season, as the ladies look to put the best brand of soccer on the pitch.
In addition, there were some other milestone moments that including the fact that Defender Mandy Freeman made her 81st appearance in the regular season, moving into sole possession of sixth in club history.
Yazmeen Ryan was able to be a part of the Dunn goal in setting up Crystal with a beauty of a pass, and the assist was the team-leading third of the season, along with the ninth of the regular season.
Continuing to impress in the cage is goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger as she now has a 5-0-2 record, and matching goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan (2021) for the longest undefeated run for a goalkeeper in club history.
To show how tightly contested the match was the stats for Gotham in the victory as they were able to edge Angel City in possession by 51-49%, in passes 433-429 and pass accuracy 76-75%.
The ladies of Gotham FC are going to next be on the road as they go up against Racing Louisville in NWSL action on Saturday, June 15 with the start of the action scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
