Historical night for NYCFC II in Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Victory against Colorado Springs

On a perfect day for Soccer in Queens, New York New York City FC II made a bit of history by advancing to the Round of 16 in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup with a 1-0 victory against the Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC.

As soon as the Boys in Blue were able to gain the ball it was all momentum going to the cage and trying to create scoring opportunities and it was thanks to the team’s strategy that a goal scored by Jonathan Jiménez in the sixth minute gave the team the lead.

Jiménez tallied his sixth goal contribution in the Tournament, as thus far he has four along with two assists. Thanks to his fine play Jonathan is tied with El Farolito’s Forward Dembor Benson and Birmingham Legion’s Forward Stéfano Pinho for the golden boot in this competition.

From there the team’s defense stood tall with plenty of timely tackles and saves by goalkeeper Tomas Romero made several key saves.

Romero was able to be in the net for his second shutout during the Tournament, and thus far in the MLX NEXT Pro Season he is logging 90 minutes and totaling a 86.5 Pass Percentage.

The guys are loving being in the Open Cup as they scored 11 goals in the four matches played which is the equivalent of 2.8 goals per match. In other impressive numbers from the tournament run thus far they are tallying eight assists.

With the victory NYCFC II is the lone MLS NEXT Pro team standing in the 2024 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. Information on the next round for the team is incoming but for now fans can catch the guys in MLS NEXT Pro action as they are on the road going up against Chicago Fire II on Monday, May 13 at 3:00pm ET at SeatGeek Stadium in Bridgeview, Illinois.
