Thus far with only two matched into the 2024 NWSL Season, the ladies of Gotham FC are impressing with the style of play they are bringing to the pitch.
In the franchise’s first showing of the season which was the 2024 NWSL Challenge Cup match against San Diego, it was an electric crowd of 14,241 fans that were in attendance and boy did the ladies put on one check of a show.
Even though the final result wasn’t what Gotham FC hoped for there were some impressive stats shown, as Gotham led in total shots (12), tackles (18) and completed crosses (16).
Then to open up the regular reason the ladies went on the road to Providence Park and took on the Portland Thorns.
This time the result was different as the ladies got the 1-0 victory, thanks to a goal from 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup Champion Esther.
It is amazing how Esther once again made an impact on the pitch for Gotham FC, as she was one of two players scoring as well in the New York/New Jersey Championship victory.
Gotham FC fans are encouraged to give a click to the following video as Head Coach Juan Carlos Amorós along with defender Sam Hiatt shares these thoughts after the team’s first victory of the season against Portland. Video is compliments of Gotham FC:
Fast forward to the 2024 meeting and boy was the action fast and furious as both teams were looking to show once again that they are going to be the teams to watch in 2024.
Some of the other highlights from the first half of play for Gotham FC against Portland came from Cassie Miller, Jenna Nighswonger, Emily Sonnett and Crystal Dunn.
For Dunn for her to be able to show her quality of play in her return to Portland is something that is of importance, as there had to have been a ton of nerves and excitement in playing on the other side of the pitch.
It was in the second half of play that Ester recorded the game-winner as some wonderful passing by Delanie Sheehan, Bruninha and Yazmeen Ryan all combined to find the forward.
There is a ton of excitement and hype surrounding the 2024 Gotham FC squad as the NWSL season is underway.
The ladies are going to continue the road trip on March 30th as they take on the NC Courage at WakeMed Soccer Park at 7:00 p.m. before returning to Red Bull Arena to host the KC Current with the start of that match scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
The 14th of April is going to be a huge day for the franchise, as that is going to be the regular season Home Opener but also the team’s 2023 NWSL Championship Banner unveiling.
