St. John’s Faces Tough Test against Sharpshooting Michigan

Playing in front of a packed crowd at Madison Square Garden and with a new look introduction the St. John’s Men’s Basketball team.

As Head Coach Rick Pitino made his MSG Debut with the Red Storm, they had celebrities such as Fat Joe and St. John’s Alumni and Mets Great John Franco in attendance.

There were several impressive performances in the First Half of play including ESPN Top-10 plays on dunks from both Joel Soriano and Jordan Dingle.

It was after that though that the Michigan Men’s Basketball team took over and showed the quality and high caliber Men’s Basketball team that they can be, by outshooting, out rebounding and leaving the rocking crowd at MSG in awe of what they were seeing.

Leading the way for the Wolverines is Dug McDaniel as he scored 26 points, dishing out seven assists while grabbing six rebounds. Nimari Burnett followed with his 21 points, three points and two assists, Terrance Williams II scored 12 points, and to round out the scoring Will Tschetter scored 10 points.

As for St. John’s there were glimpses of greatness but the game against Michigan is one that is very different than the one, they had against Stony Brook. When the Red Storm went up against the Seawolves the team distributed the ball a lot more.

And that is a trend that Head Coach Rick Pitino hopes the team can get back into as the rest of the season progresses.

As for the rest of the St. John’s scoring efforts they were led by Joel Soriano as he finished the night with 15 points and nine rebounds. Soriano had himself a bit of a milestone moment in the game as he was able to reach the 1,000-point mark.

Daniss Jenkins and Jordan Dingle both showed some fine shooting as they both scored 10 points each.
There is a ton of good news that surrounds the Men’s Basketball team at St. John’s though as a crowd of 14,188 were in attendance and all of them are in favor of the Red Storm. To be able to feel and be around the type of energy that both the students and the supporters were able to bring shows that thus far everyone surrounding the school is buying into what the program is doing and even better is that the team is only three games into the season.

There is going to be a ton of time for this 2023-24 edition of the St. John’s Men’s Basketball team to find their chemistry and rhythm, the only thing is the schedule for the team is going to be one that is going to be tough and one that is going to prepare them for the upcoming BIG EAST Conference Men’s Basketball Season.

Up next for the St. John’s Men’s Basketball team is a trip to Charleston, S.C. to participate in the Shriners Children’s Charleston Classic that is going to be played on November 16. Up first for the Red Storm is a game against North Texas with the tip scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
