Close Call for Gotham FC in 2-1 loss to San Diego

It was a close call for Gotham FC (7-5-4) as with the team’s complete roster back on the field together again, they took on the San Diego Wave (7-6-3). Ultimately the final score was a 2-1 loss, and a match were the ladies left their heart on the field.

In terms of the action, there were plenty for fans of women’s soccer to enjoy, as San Diego got the action going in the 15th minute with their first scoring opportunity, when Makenzy Doniak blasted a shot that went off the crossbar and into the goal for the 1-0 lead.

Gotham FC started to attempt their comeback around six minutes later, when defender Jenna Nighswonger that just missed the far post.

At the half there were plenty of positive stats in terms of the way that Gotham FC played, as the ladies led all first-half possessions (60%) and attempted three corner kicks.

That positive trend continued in the second half, as Gotham FC attempted another great chance int he 53rd minute. It is a moment that is going to be talked about for a while, as Delanie Sheehan looked like she found the equalizing goal. That goal was disallowed due to the video review.

From there was plenty of action from both sides of the field, as it was the Wave that found the second goal of the game as Amirah Ali got in behind the backline for a one-v-one to score.

There was a scary moment in the match as Gotham FC Abby Smith went down to injury, so the team had themselves a unique situation. They had to call in one of the position players to help in the cage, as all the available subs were used already.

Coming in to save the day is Nealy Martin, which turned out to be a great move by Head Coach Juan Carlos Amoros, as Martin has experience in playing the position in College.

It was in the 85′ when Amirah Ali netted the second goal for San Diego, and from there it was all about Gotham trying to get themselves back into the night.
