New York Liberty win Intense Match Up Against Mystics, 96-87

When it comes time for the top teams in the WNBA in the Eastern Conference most fans will think of the New York Liberty and the Washington Mystics. The fans in the Entertainment and Sports Arena were in for a treat in seeing the two battle, sadly for those fans of the Mystics it was New York coming out on top 96-87.

The intensity between these two squads was at all-time high. The Liberty and Mystics both lost their previous game which had both players and coaches striving for a win Friday night.

It was New York rebounding in more ways than one, as the Liberty had a season high with 48 rebounds with three of the three players scoring a double-double and the second time three of the players had ten plus rebounds.

Leading the way in scoring for New York is Jonquel Jones, as she finished with a season-high 27 points on 71.4% (10-14) shooting from the field, including 40% (2-5) from three, a season-high-tying 11 rebounds, three assists, three blocks. For Jones otherwise known as JJ this was the best game she played for the season.

“Looking the mirror and seeing what you can do better. Rebounding is something I can bring to the team. Something the team really needs and something I have not been really doing. After watching the last game just having that mindset,” Jones said after the game.

To hear more from JJ, along with Head Coach Sandy Brondello and Breanna Stewart from after the game….video is compliments of the New York Liberty:

Breanna Stewart totaled 24 points on 52.9% (9-17) shooting from the floor, including 60% (3-5) from deep, and 10 rebounds, marking her 11th double-double of the season. Sabrina Ionescu recorded her first double double of the season, as she scored 16 points on 40% (4-10) shooting from the field, including 37.5% (3-8) from three, a season-high 11 rebounds, and a season-high-tying nine assists.

As for the Mystics they were able to make things close, testing the Liberty on every turn. Continuing to show consistency in filling up the stat sheet and winning over the hearts of Mystics fans with every game that she plays is Brittney Sykes with a season-high 29 points, to go along with ten rebounds, three assists and a steal. At the end of the day Sykes finished with her second double-double of the season.

Fans of the Mystics are encouraged to check out the following video featuring thoughts from Head Coach Eric Thibault, Brittney Sykes and Shatori Walker-Kimbrough…compliments of the Washington Mystics:

Also shining for the Mystics is Natasha Cloud with her 17 points, five assists and four rebounds. In addition, Shatori Walker-Kimbrough added 15 points, two rebound, two assists and two blocks.

Up next for the New York Liberty return to the friendly confines of the Barclays Center for a 3:00 p.m. tip against the Indiana Fever on Sunday, July 23, 2023.

As for the Washington Mystics, the ladies feel as if they are close to rebounding in their own way and look to do so against an ultra-tough Phoenix Mercury team on Sunday as well in the Entertianment and Sports Arena. tip is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
