Growing up and playing sports there are certain dreams and moments that one can only hope for, as the young ladies grow up to become women and put in countless hours and minutes into perfecting the craft of playing the sport of soccer.
As they do so they envision certain scenarios in their mind, moments like when they score the game-winning goal, the hopes of being able to play professionally heck even the potential idea of playing for their country.
Well four players on the Gotham FC squad were able to see many of those moments and even more come true, as it has been confirmed recently that four players got the call to represent their countries. In addition, one member of the team was named to the provisional roster, as the squads for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup have been unveiled.
Fans of Gotham FC are encouraged to check out the following video featuring thoughts from Kristie Mewis, Kelley O’Hara, and Lynn Williams along with Head Coach Juan Carlos Amorós from the announcement:
Appearing on NBC’s Today Show, Gotham FC midfielder Kristie Mewis, defender Kelly O’Hara and forward Lynn Williams are all going to be a huge part to the U.S. Women’s National Team.
Fans can also keep an eye out for forward Ifeoma Onumonu, as she is going to play for Team Nigeria, and midfielder Sinead Farrelly, as she is going to be a part of the provisional roster for Team Ireland.
Here are some of the stats and information for each of the stars on the USWNT.
Kristie Mewis thus far has 191 career appearances to go along with 32 career goals during her time with the NWSL thus far. This is going to be Mewis second tour of duty with the USWNT, as she also appeared on the 2013-14 squads; that was prior to a devastating ACL injury that kept her out of the pool for more than five years.
Thankfully, Mewis is healthy again and playing stellar soccer with Gotham FC, this is going to be the first FIFA Women’s World Cup for the midfielder.
Then there is Lynn Williams, after being on top of the world at the Empire State Building on June 20, the folks at the USWNT added to the great news by adding her to the roster.
This is also Williams’ first World Cup, but the forward has represented TEAM USA, as she helped to win an Olympic Bronze medal in Tokyo.
Kelly O’Hara has herself a resume that would make any soccer player proud, as the two-time World Cup Champion, Olympic gold medalist is making her fourth appearance in the Women’s World Cup Tournament.
O’Hara had 157 caps, 21 assists, and three goals for the USWNT. One of the most memorable moments for Kelly came during the 2015 Women’s World Cup semis in the 2-0 victory over Germany.
The team’s two other international stars in Onumonu and Farrelly are both feel good stories on the squad, as ‘Ify’ is making her first trip to the World Cup with Nigeria. Farrelly, meanwhile, is a part of Ireland’s provisional roster, and has been able to earn caps for Ireland in friendlies against the U.S. in April.
It is a proud day for fans of both Gotham FC and Women’s Soccer everywhere as these young women go off to play for club and country.
Gotham FC is next going to be in action on June 25, when they play host to the Chicago Red Stars at Red Bull Arena at 5:30 p.m.
