As the internet speculated on the future of New York Giants Quarterback Daniel Jones most people including myself didn’t expect to see the words “Contract Extension” coming up as the solution. Franchise Tag was the going phrase. Instead we got a shocker: 4 years/$160 million dollars with an additional 35 million in incentives (which haven’t been made public).
By comparison, Patrick Mahomes is set to make $162 million over those same four years. Daniel Jones for his four year career won his first and only playoff game this past season against the Minnesota Vikings. That’s a ton of faith in someone who only had 3,900 yards overall last year.
BUT, is it truly the wrong call? The kneejerk reaction of the internet is absolutely yes, but I’ll be honest, even though my first reaction would be to agree, I’m not quite as convinced now, and much of it has to do with my faith in GM Joel Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll. In a single year they took a complete laughing stock of a team and turned them into a playoff team with a win. They gave Giants fans like myself hope again and a reason to be proud. Do we really see more than they do? I admitted to being wrong about Danny Dimes last year when I saw his turnaround, and I’m willing to go out on a limb and say maybe, just MAYBE I was wrong again.
As a 40 year New York Giants fan I’ve had more than my share and pain, disappointment and misery. That 3rd and 9 QB sneak in the last game of the 2021 season was the biggest lowest point in my Big Blue fandom. But Schoen and Daboll gave me hope as soon as they walked in the door and that’s only grown this season. Now, we have no choice but to believe they can keep that hope going with this monstrous contract. Because if Jones flounders, all of their time in New York might be a short one.
