It was a thriller for the St. John’s University Men’s Basketball team, as a tenacious defense along with a fast-paced style of basketball was able to help them to a 73-68 victory over No. 20/17 Providence at Madison Square Garden.
This was the second time this season the St. John’s Men’s Basketball team was able to knock off a ranked opponent.
Returning to the Red Storm roster, David Jones was able to lead the team with 16 points and seven rebounds. The junior was able to have a 5-for-12 performance from inside the three-point arc.
Freshman AJ Stoor was able to have a double-figure performance for the seventh time in the last nine games, having 15 points on a 6-for-11 performance from the floor. Storr was also able to add five rebound, most which were huge in helping the team in the victory against the Friars.
Dylan Addae-Wusu had some ESPN highlight plays, having six of his 13 points in the final nine minutes of play. The junior guard was able to connect on all four of his free-throws.
The dynamic duo of Joel Soriano and Posh Alexander have been leading the Red Storm for most of the basketball season. They both shined once against in the game against Providence.
One of the more memorable moments in the game came from Joel Soriano had a thunderous dunk in the game, while also having his 20th double-double of the season with 10 points and 12 rebounds, while Alexander almost had a double-double himself having 10 points and nine assists.
The victory over Providence was the Red Storm’s second Quad 1 victory, and Top-25 win in the past eight games since downing then No. 6/7 UConn on January 15 in Hartford, Conn.
In addition, the victory for St. John’s was the third over Providence in the last four meetings in New York City.
The St. John’s University Men’s Basketball team will return to action on Tuesday, as they will hit the road to take on DePaul for a 9:00 p.m. game at Wintrust Arena. For those wanting to check out the telecast can do so on the FS1 network.
