There have been a ton of moves made by the Washington Mystics as they look to make a splash in the 2023 Season.
The first move that was made is that the team was able to sign three-time WNBA All-Defensive Guard Brittney Sykes.

“Sykes brings a skill set to our backcourt that perfectly complements our other perimeter players,” said General Manager Mike Thibault. “Her speed in transition, ability to get to the basket or find open teammates, will allow us to accelerate our offensive pace and flow.”

Thibault continued, “She can play offense and defense at three positions, and as one of the premier defensive guards in the league, she will help us continue to excel as one of the best defensive teams in the WNBA. Brittney is an exciting addition to the Washington Mystics. Welcome to D.C., ‘Slim!’”

Sykes comes into the franchise after earning WNBA All-Defensive First Team honors (2021, 2020, 2022) with the Los Angeles Sparks. When she was with the Sparks in the 2022 season, the six-year veteran had the most steals (65) and blocks (22) in her career, in addition to averaging 12.7 points, 3.7 rebounds and assists.

In addition, the team was able to bring back the uncrowned Sixth Women of the Year in Shatori Walker-Kimbrough.
Walker-Kimbrough was a huge presence for the franchise during the course of the 2022 season, after making 35 appearances, while also averaging 6.9 points, 1.8 rebounds, 1.15 assists and 1.1 steals.

Finally in a move that is a fascinating one to many is the fact that the Mystics have relinquished the rights to Rui Machida by mutual agreement.

“We really enjoyed having Rui as part of our organization last season,” said Thibault. “However, with the new changes in our roster, there isn’t the same opportunity here for her this coming season. This will give her the chance to see if there is a better fit for her elsewhere. We wish her the best of luck.”

A fan favorite, Machida shined in 36 games, averaging 2.6 assist in 12.9 minutes while showing off a phenomenal speed and court vision with the Mystics.

There will be plenty of excitement to come as the Mystics are close to starting of the 2023 season. The first game for the ladies will take place on Friday, May 19 versus the New York Liberty, with the tip scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
