St. John’s Women’s Basketball unable to weather Villanova, 64-61

The St. John’s University Women’s Basketball team was unable to weather No. 25 Villanova, as the Red Storm fell by a score of 64-61 in Finneran Pavilion on Saturday afternoon.

Joe Tartamella had the Red Storm (14-3, 5-3 BIG EAST) with a lead  prior to Villanova mounting a comeback and the eventual victory.

Villanova, who has the nation’s leading scorers, Maddy Siegrist, had a game-high 32 points in the afternoon, including 18 in the final frame.

The Red Storm, meanwhile, had four players in double-figure scoring and all played solidly in the loss to the Wildcats. Helping to lead the way was Jayla Everett who had 18 points  on 7-of-1 shooting.

Having a stellar performance was Rayven Peeples had her second double-double of the season with 11 points and 11 rebounds.

It was a strong first half performance for Unique Drake, as the guard had 3-of-4 shootings from the three-point arc. Also finishing with double-digit scoring was Kadaja Bailey who had 13 points.

It was a back-and-forth night between the two teams, as St. John’s and Villanova exchanged scoring opportunities. As the team’s head into the locker room the Red Storm had a 39-27 lead. St. John’s put up some impressive stats as they had 66.7% from beyond the arc.

Villanova started to climb back into the game thanks to Siegrist who went on an 11-0 run to make the score 59-54. The Wildcats were able to take over and continued a great scoring momentum to earn a 64-61 victory.

St. John’s will return to the friendly confines of Carnesecca Arena, as they will take on Marquette University for a Wednesday night game. The tip between the two teams is set for 7:00 p.m.
