Joel Soriano Named to BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll

St. John’s senior center Joel Soriano has been named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll, it was announced by the conference office on Monday.

Soriano averaged 13.0 points while recording team-highs with 11.5 rebounds and 2.0 blocks to help lead St. John’s (4-0) to wins over Central Connecticut State and Nebraska. The Yonkers native also shot 57.9 percent (11-19 FG) from the field during the two-game stretch.

On Thursday, Soriano registered his third double-double in four games this season in the Red Storm’s 20-point rout of Nebraska in the Gavitt Tipoff Games. He finished with 17 points to go with a career-high 18 points and three blocks in the win over the Cornhuskers at Carnesecca Arena. His 18 boards marked the most by a St. John’s player since current staff member Zendon Hamilton pulled down 18 on Jan. 19, 1997 versus Rutgers.

Soriano began the week with nine points on 4-of-6 shooting and five boards in an efficient 19 minutes of action during the team’s 17-point win over Central Connecticut State on Tuesday.

Soriano leads the BIG EAST and ranks 11th in the nation averaging 11.0 rebounds per game this season. His three double-doubles also top the conference and rank second in Division I.

St. John’s returns to action Monday in Brooklyn when the Red Storm squares off with Temple at Barclays Center in the Empire Classic. Tip-off is slated for 9:30 p.m. and the contest will air on ESPNU.
