D.C. United earn draw against Toronto FC 2-2

In what was a beautiful day at Audi Field, one in which featured a fireworks display and a helicopter flyover D.C. United were able to earn a draw against Toronto FC in MLS action on May 21.

The match had fireworks of its own on the field, as both squads were able to produce quality chances on the offensive side of the field.

The evening started off on a great note for the black-and-red as Edison Flores found the back of the net for a 1-0 lead. Flores who was able to get a beauty of a cross from Michael Estrada had the supporters of the D.C. United feeling hopeful. As for Flores that was his first goal of the season.

From there the home side attempted to maintain their 1-0 lead, but Toronto and their speed and wonderful passing ability were able to tie the match up thanks to a Ayo Akinola goal in the 36 minute. For Akinola that was his first MLS goal since July 3, 20221.

When the Second Half of play D.C. United were able to put together some nice combinations and eventually a Taxi Fountas’s rebound was booted into the cage by Estrada for a 2-0 lead. For Estrada that was his fourth goal of the season.

Fountas has been playing well for D.C. United as the forward now has five goals and three assists in seven appearances.

Hanging on the edges of their seats the wonderful crowd at Audi Field held their breath in the hopes of earning a home victory. Ultimately it was not meant to be as Toronto FC found the tying goal as Jonathan Osorio scored in the 89th minute.

Up next for D.C. United will play a road match against the New York Red Bulls on May 28, with the match scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
