Sunday, May 1 will be a memorable one for the members of the Washington Spirit staff and those who play on the field.

To start the day the team had promised a celebration for the fact that the team had won the 2021 NWSL Championship. They had said to the fans that there would be a ring ceremony along with a special performance by Grammy Award-Winning Artist Ella Mai.

Even though their was rain, the Washington Spirit was able to pull not only that but a tremendously performed effort on the pitch against the OL Reign.

First thing was first and that was the fact that the rain in the sky eventually eased up so that the Washington Spirit could start of the 2022 NWSL Campaign at Audi Field. The ladies showed off a great form getting off a tremendous amount of shots.

It was the OL Reign who looked like they were going to get on the board first, as they had themselves a tremendous Rose Lavelle penalty kick opportunity that was saved by a diving Aubrey Kingsbury.

The Spirit were eventually rewarded for their effort and hustle when  Ashley Sanchez showed a great burst of speed and found a ball from Anna Heilferty to find the back of the cage for the 1-0 lead.

From there the ladies looked like they were holding onto that lead with everything in their power. Attempting to keep the OL Reign off the board and did a tremendous job with that.

When the ladies came out of the locker room there was a ton of adjustments made by the OL Reign, it was Lavelle who notched things up for the visiting side.

With 10,000 people all pulling for the Spirit, the ladies returned their energy in full, as a beautiful combination between Trinity Rodman and Ashley Hatch gave the team a 2-1 lead.

From there the team’s stellar defensive alignment was able to hold down the fort and hold the OL Reign off the boards. Afterward the team was able to celebrate their 2021 NWSL Championship with Mayor Muriel Bowser and an amazing musical performance by Ella Mai.

The Washington Spirit have plenty of soccer to play as they continue their quest for the Challenge Cup on May 4 in the Semis matchup against the very same OL Reign. They will be playing at Audi Field with the time of the match set for 8 p.m.
