Following an 11-day hiatus, the St. John’s women’s basketball team will return to Carnesecca Arena to face Brown on Thursday night. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
The Red Storm (5-6) will look to seize the opportunity against the Bears (4-7) after its matchup against Georgetown on Friday was canceled due to COVID protocols within the Hoyas program. Thursday will mark the second-ever meeting between the two programs with the first resulting in a Johnnies’ win, 73-49, on Nov. 25, 2006.
St. John’s will look to respond after a hard-fought loss to the DePaul Blue Demons, 107-93, on Sunday, Dec. 19. Despite the setback, Leilani Correa tied her career-high with an eye-opening 35 points. The Manchester, N.J., native converted on 13 of her 19 shot attempts, including a 4-of-8 effort from beyond the arc, to lead the team in scoring for the seventh time this season. Correa has now reached 35 points three times in her career.
Danielle Cosgrove and Unique Drake alsoturned in strong outings against DePaul, which leads the nation in scoring offense at 91.7 points per outing. Cosgrove scored 13 points for the second straight game and knocked down a pair of 3-pointers. The Holbrook, N.Y., native has now drained multiple long-range baskets in seven games this season. Drake scored 16 points off the bench to finish second behind Correa in the scoring column. The junior guard has reached double figures in three straight games and six contests overall this season.
Entering Thursday’s contest, Correa leads the BIG EAST in scoring at 20.8 points per game. The 2021 First Team All-BIG EAST selection averages nearly two points more per game than the next closest player in the conference, DePaul’s Aneesah Morrow. Correa has reached double figures in every game she has appeared this season with five showings of 20-plus points.
As a team, the Red Storm ranks second in the conference in scoring, racking up an average of 76.2 points per game. The Johnnies continue to be effective from distance, sitting at third in the BIG EAST in both three-point field goal percentage and triples made.
Brown comes to Queens after almost three weeks away from the court. The Bears have not played since they routed Fisher, an NAIA school in Boston, 90-31, on Dec. 11. Brown has won two of its last three games including its last road outing against Holy Cross on Dec. 5.
Freshman guard Isabella Mauricio leads the way for Brown. Mauricio paces the team in scoring with 11.7 points per game and sits fourth in the conference in three-point percentage, converting on 34% of her attempts.
