The always intense and physical rivalry between the Washington Capitals and the Pittsburgh Penguins continued on Sunday afternoon, with the Penguins getting a 4-3 shootout victory over the Capitals.
Leading the way for the Capitals in scoring was Nic Dowd, Nicklas Backstrom and Alex Ovechkin. For Ovechkin, the Washington Captain was able to record his 707th goal of his career, which moves him within one of Mike Gartner for seventh on the all-time list.
For the Penguins they were able to get the shootout goal from Jake Guentzel, which helped to lift them to the victory. Also helping Pittsburgh on the offense was Evan Rodrigues, Colton Sceviour and Marcus Pettersson. In the cage for the home side Casey DeSmith made some stellar stops, recording 20 total.
The overall play for Washington has been able to improve a ton, and one could tell by watching the team that they are getting their skating legs from under them, playing a very fast paced and up-tempo game.
The Washington Capitals will enjoy a day off before facing-off against the Penguins on Tuesday (tomorrow) in a game that is schedule for 7:00 p.m.
