The New York Mets (8-11) got a big blast from their bats in the 11-6 victory over the Washington Nationals (6-8) in Major League Baseball action at Citi Field on Wednesday. Prior to the start of the season fans of the franchise have been excited to see what this offense can do and got a bit of a taste of that in yesterday’s game.
Brandon Nimmo started the positive momentum for New York ripping a monster shot in the bottom of the first inning. New York also saw some great offense from Pete Alonso and Dominic Smith, who both recorded a double and a homer, Andres Giménez and Wilson Ramos who both were able to tally hits during the game.
All of this offense came in support of starter Robert Gsellman, who is vying for a spot in the regular rotation for the Mets. Gsellman has always had a great mix of pitches and showed that again in the game against the Nationals.
The Mets are facing some issues when it comes time for their pitching staff, as Noah Syndergaard is out for the season and Marcus Stroman just made the incredibly tough decision to opt-out of playing.
Gsellman is looking to be the solution to the Mets problems of what they will do for an every day starter, has had prior experience as a starter in the past having debuted as one in 2016. In that year Gsellman held a 2.63 ERA in seven starts. It was in 2018 when the Mets had more of a stacked rotation the franchise decided to move him to the pen.
Times are changing not only for New York, but for all of the Major League Baseball teams, who are all trying to figure out how to best use the rosters that they have in place during what is a very fast paced season.
New York and Washington will wrap up this series tonight (Thursday) as lefty David Peterson (2-1, 3.78 ERA) takes on righty Austin Voth (0-1, 1.80 ERA) . For Peterson he himself is looking to show Rojas and the rest of the Mets Management why he should have a spot in the daily rotation for the franchise, the last three starts he was able to keep the bats in the game and the team did well. Voth, meanwhile had a strong start against the Baltimore Orioles on Saturday. Citi Field holds a special place in the heart of Voth, who made his MLB Debut in Queens on July 14, 2018. Two Mets who have hit well against the Nationals starter is Michael Conforto who holds a .400 average.
The game between the Mets and Nationals is set to start at 1:10 p.m. and the action can be seen on the SNY and MASN Networks.
