New York Jets Head Coach Todd Bowles, 8.12

On how much he ended up missing because practice was cut short…

We probably missed about 15 minutes worth. It was toward the end anyway, but we got enough on film to watch so we got some good work in.

On his thoughts about the intensity…

The intensity is good. Fights are not to be tolerated and had. We are not trying to fight them and they’re not trying to fight us. They want to be boxers and wrestlers, they probably want to be in another sport. We are trying to get better, again, they’re trying to get, we’re trying to get better. Some things happen, overzealousness, I talked to my guys and Coach (Jay) Gruden talked to his guys and we’ll just have better practices tomorrow because that is just a waste of time to me.

On what he thinks about Trent Cannon to this point…

To this point he’s done some good things. It’s early, he got some things to work on as well, but he’s fast, we understand what he has talent at and we understand what he needs to work out as well.

On when he expects to decide on his quarterback rotation for Thursday…

Sometime in the next two or three days. We’ll get there.

On Sam Darnold getting a vast majority of reps today…

No indication. Just getting him caught up on some things.

On his takeaways from Darnold’s performance Friday…

He can get the ball off quicker. Obviously from the shot clock, getting to the line, the good throws and you can see but just overall game operation. As he plays he gets experience and that’s to be expected. So we are happy with what we saw. He got some things to build on, as does Teddy (Bridgewater), as does Josh (McCown) and we’ll go from there.

On how important it for Darnold to go with and against the first team players…

It’s more important to get him working. First, second or third team they are going to be different guys throughout the game. Whether they get hurt or not. It’s just important to get him working and caught up on certain things the defenses are doing. That’s more important than getting reps on first, second or third team.

On if all three quarterbacks will play Thursday…

All three need to be ready to play.

On Isaiah Crowell’s injury update…

No, he’s back home. I told you he had a concussion, so we left him back home. He’ll be ready when we get back.

On how the quarterback competition changes how he approaches the preseason and training camp…

Just a matter of splitting up the reps and knowing when to give what guy what. And then what guy the other stuff, and who sees what in practice and who’ll see what in the game. So we work through different dynamics for that.

On if it is complicated in terms Darnold needing to get different things out of it that Teddy Bridgewater and Josh McCown…

It doesn’t complicate it. They are all different types of quarterbacks. If you have to play one in the game, you always try to tailor things to what they can and can’t do. So we are just tailoring things right now and finding out more about him each day.

On if he expected the tempers to be flaring…

You understand that you want everybody to be professional. And everybody is professional for the most part. We thank them for having us down here, we got a lot of good work and they got a lot of good work. It was two or three instances that scuffled that we got to keep under-wrapped and play and practice the right way. Because they are not going to get any better fighting us and we’re not going to get any better fighting them. So it’s just football.

On Brian Winters not doing team drills…

He’s sore. And we’re letting him play it slow, we don’t have to play him right now. He’ll probably play in the game but today we held him out.

On the update on Chris Herndon and Neal Sterling…

No more updates. They are day-by-day, week-by- week.

On who else stayed home other than Crowell…

Just Rontez (Miles) and (Steve) McLendon. These are the ones that will be out and won’t be back for a little while but McLendon could’ve came but we wanted him to get more treatment.

On if Beachum is in Richmond…

Beachum is not here as well.

On if he concerned if they might have to add someone at tight end…

Not yet. I don’t think they are serious. So they’re nicks and it is to be expected the first two weeks of training camp. So hopefully they will be back soon.

On if McCown has to play in the preseason…

We haven’t gotten to who plays yet. All quarterbacks need to be ready to play and we’ll make those decisions as we see fit.

On if he will get a fair evaluation if he doesn’t see McCown play in a preseason game…

I can get a fair evaluation of Josh (McCown). I’ve see him quite a bit, I’ve seen Teddy (Bridgewater) quite a bit. Sam (Darnold) is the one that has to catch up.
