Liberty drop tough 80-74 decision to the Mercury in return to Madison Square Garden

The New York Liberty (2-3) had their return to Madison Square Garden spoiled by the Phoenix Mercury (6-3) by a final score of 80-74 in WNBA action.

It was a fast paced affair as 7,215 screaming kids cheered on the Liberty in an electric atmosphere. The scoring was fast and furious , as there were 17 lead changes and eight ties.

Leading the way for New York was Center Tina Charles, who finished the game with 25 points. With her 10th point in the game Charles surpassed Hall-of-Famer Sheryl Swoopes on the all-time scoring list , as she now sits in the 19th spot.

Bria Hartley had 18 points, Amanda Zahui B had nine points and Marissa Coleman had eight points to all round out the scoring for New York. Brittany Boyd made her season debut for the team, after sitting out due to a torn Achilles’ tendon injury. The Guard recorded her first points in the. 7:57 mark of the Second Quarter.

As for Phoenix they had three players in double-figure scoring as Diana Taurasi led the way with 26 points, Briann January had 21 points and DeWanna Bonner had 18 points.

For Taurasi, she was able to reach the 8,000 career point plateau during the game against the New York Liberty, becoming the first WNBA player to reach the milestone.

It will be a fast turnaround for the Liberty, who will return to the Westchester County Center on Thursday to host the Connecticut Sun in WNBA action set for 7:00 p.m.
