Distribution of the ball and balanced scoring led the St. John’s Men’s Basketball team (9-11, 3-4 BIG EAST) to a 78-68 victory over DePaul (8-11, 1-5 BIG EAST) in what was the last of the home games at Carnesecca Arena.
Leading the way on the offensive side for the Red Storm was Malik Ellison, who had a career day, draining seven of his 10 tries from the field, including a 5-of-6 effort from beyond the arc, finishing the game with a career-high 23 points and four assists in 33 minutes of action.
There were three other players in double figures for St. John’s as Shamorie Ponds finished the game with 14 points and Tariq Owens recorded 10 points.
The Red Storm drained 12 of its 22 attempts from downtown, the team’s highest single game total since the Johnnies went 12-of-27 from deep against Syracuse on Dec. 21. The effort also marked the third time this season that St. John’s has shot 50 percent or better from three.
In addition St. John’s as a team recorded 18 assists, with the team passing the ball around the court for most of the night. There was also some tremendous defense that included the team recording eight blocks.
With the victory, the Red Storm has now surpassed its win total from last season with more than a third of the campaign still remaining.
St. John’s will play the remainer of the home games at Madison Square Garden, as they will play Xavier on 1/29 with the tip set for 6:00 p.m.
