It was Heartache in the Fifth Round of the US Open Cup for the New York Cosmos, as they were elimated by the New England Revolution by a final score of 3-2 in soccer action at Belson Stadium on the Campus of St. John’s University.
The Cosmos were able to maintain possession, and played well througout the night, in the end though there were some critical errors that cost the team the opportunity to advance.
Things were looking well for the Boys in Green as they struck first thanks to a Rubén Bover goal in the 38th minute. Teal Bunbury struck to notch things up for the Revolution, as the two teams headed into the locker room tied at the Half.
Sebastián Guenzatti broke the tie in the 56th minute, before New England notched thing up again via a goal by Kei Kamara at the 75th minute.
Kamara, who was a Second Half sub for the Revolution seemed to be a spark for the team, instantly making his teammates more aggressive. It had seemed as if the tide had turned for the visitors once he came into the match.
Bunbury scored his second in the 83rd minute that eventually gave New England the victory, and allowing them to advance in this US Open Cup Tournament.
This is the third time the New York Cosmos have been outsted in the Fifth Round of the Tournament, and it does not get any easier. The only thing the team can do now is learn from the experience and get ready for the North American Soccer League Fall Season.
The Cosmos return to action Saturday at 7 p.m. ET, when they host the Ottawa Fury FC, which will be the first game of the Fall Season at Hofstra’s Shuart Stadium.
