Fordham WBB to Host CCSU in WNIT First Round

The Fordham women’s basketball team (20-11) earned its second-ever WNIT bid and will play host to Central Connecticut (19-12) this Thursday, March 19, it was announced Monday night by the Women’s National Invitational Tournament selection committee.

The Rams receive a home game in the first round and face the Blue Devils, the Northeast Conference regular season champs. Tipoff time will be announced Tuesday by the WNIT. The winner faces the winner of the Army – St. John’s game in the second round, which would take place sometime between March 21-24.

Fordham has reached the postseason three straight seasons under head coach Stephanie Gaitley. Two years ago, the Rams went 2-1 in the WNIT, before falling to California by one point in the first round of the 2014 NCAA Tournament.

In the Dec. 9 contest in New Britain, Conn., Fordham constructed one of its best overall games of the season in the 72-36 victory. The Rams raced out to a 38-17 halftime lead and never looked back, as they allowed a season-best low in points. Fordham also did not have a single player reach double figures in scoring en route to shooting 52.9 percent from the field, while holding CCSU to only 28.3 percent.

A total of 64 teams play in the WNIT, which starts with five games Wednesday, March 18. Joining the Rams out of the Atlantic 10 are Duquesne and Richmond.
