One day after her performances against Villanova and Georgetown earned her a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for the ninth time this season, junior guard Aliyyah Handford has been named the Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association Player of the Week, it was announced this morning.

This is the second time this season that Handford has garnered this recognition, as she was also named the MBWA Player of the Week on Dec. 23.

The Newark, N.J., native kicked off the weekend with a game-changing effort in the Red Storm’s critical win over BIG EAST contender Villanova.  Handford poured in a game-high 25 points on 11-of-16 shooting from the field and pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.  She also recorded three steals and scored five of the team’s final eight points in the 56-51 win.

On Sunday against Georgetown, Handford delivered one of her most well-rounded performances of the year in leading the Red Storm to a victory on Senior Day.  After tallying 18 points in the first half, Handford went on to finish the game with a season-high 27 points, a career-high seven assists, six rebounds and four steals.  In addition to converting on 10 of her 19 tries from the floor, Handford also went seven-of-nine from the charity stripe.

Handford and the Red Storm have one weekend on BIG EAST regular season play remaining, traveling to Butler and Xavier for games on Friday and Sunday, respectively.
