Following a week that saw her put up a pair of stellar efforts against conference opponents, junior guard Aliyyah Handford has been named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll, it was announced this morning by the league office.
Handford, who reclaimed the BIG EAST scoring lead with her performances, averaged 24.5 points, 7.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.5 steals per game in a 1-1 week for the Red Storm.
A one-time BIG EAST Player of the Week this season, this is the fifth time that Handford has been named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll in 2014-15.
Against Butler on Friday night, Handford scored 27 points on 10-of-17 shooting, grabbed five rebounds and dished out four assists in her team’s first BIG EAST loss of the season.
Two days later on the road in Omaha, the Newark, N.J., native scored 18 of her game-high 22 points in the second half, anchoring the Red Storm in one of their most convincing wins of the year. In addition to recording nine rebounds, Handford also helped St. John’s put up its best defensive effort of the season, limiting the Bluejays to just 38 points and 23.6 percent clip from the floor.
Handford and the Red Storm return to action on Friday morning, hosting DePaul for Field Trip Day at 11:30 a.m. in Queens.
