MSG Celebrates Return of NCAA Tournament by bringing in greats of College Hoops

Madison Square Garden celebrated the return of the NCAA Division 1 Tournament in style, as some of the all-time greats in College Hoops gathered to share their favorite memories with the members of the media.

Greats like Cal Ramsey; Ron Nadell; Floyd Layne; Art Hyland; Oscar Robertson; Syracuse legend Dwyane ‘Pearl’ Washington; along with St. John’s Legend Felipe Lopez and Hall of Fame Coach Jim Calhoun were on hand to share what made and still to this day makes The Garden the place to catch College Basketball.

There are few venues in the country that can combine the history that Madison Square Garden has (even in the newer form the building still has history) but add in the fact that The World’s Most Famous Arena is now a state-of-the art facility will make it one that will be a Basketball destination for years to come.

Fans who will be coming in to enjoy the NCAA East Regional will get to experience a full complement of amenities that have been introduced as a result of the self-fused, three year project.

In addition all of the history that goes along with The Garden, moments that were made by guys like Cal Ramsey, who is one of the all-time greats in NYU Basketball. Cal to this day still holds a number of NYU records, while also getting the opportunity to play against North Carolina.

Also helping to make The Garden the Mecca that it is today was Oscar Robertson, who helped to lead the University of Cincinnati men’s basketball team to two Final Fours during his tenure from 1957 to 1960. On January 9, 1958 ‘Big O,”  set an all-time scoring record at 56 points.

Three names that will forever be known to fans in the NYC area are that of Jim Calhoun, Dwayne ‘Pearl’ Washington, and Felipe Lopez.

Washington and Lopez both left their marks as the all-time greats in Syracuse and St. John’s, who both tout themselves as ‘New York’s Team; while Calhoun’s Hall of Fame career was aided by Coaching some amazing UConn Team’s at the garden.

During the 2013-14 season Madison Square Garden got to host 10 of the top 25 teams listed in both USA Today Coaches Poll and the AP Top 25 postseason rankings. MSG also just completed hosting the BIG EAST Men’s Basketball Championships, so you know that the Mecca is once again ready to reign as top venue for College Hoops.
