In a day filled with emotion the Manhattan College Men’s Basketball team (22-7, 15-5 MAAC) earned a 68-63 victory over Canisius College (20-11, 14-6 MAAC) in Sunday College Hoops action at Draddy Gymnasium.
Prior to the game the Jaspers honored their three seniors Michael Alvarado (Bronx, NY), George Beamon (Roslyn, NY) and Rhamel Brown (Brooklyn, NY) . Only two of the three seniors were able to take to the floor for their last home game as Alvarado was not dressed for the game.
During halftime the College took time to honor retiring Athletic Director Bob Byrnes who served the school for 26 years.
Amid all the emotion and ceremonies there was also one heck of a basketball game between Manhattan and Canisius, as the Jaspers went from a team with a first half lead, to two teams tied in the second half, to the Jaspers earning the victory within the final minutes of the game.
Helping to lead the way on offense was Beamon who finished the game with 21 points, following was Junior Guard RaShawn Stores (Bronx, NY) who not only had 15 points but also had a great game on the defensive end of the court-helping to lead the defensive unit to guarding a very dangerous Billy Baron.
Manhattan also had impressive plays and offensive performances from Emmy Andujar nine points, while Ashton Pankey and Shane Richards eight points each.
With the victory the Jaspers now have the #2 seed heading into the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. Manhattan will now head to Springfield, MA where they will wait to see who they will play on Saturday March 8 at 6:30 p.m, airing on ESPN3. The Jaspers are set to play the winner of the game between the #7 seeded St. Peter’s and the #10 seeded Fairfield.
