1495 Sports brings these New York Jets quotes for 10/3/12:

Head Coach Rex Ryan:

Opening Statement:

“First off, I know (the media was) given the news on Santonio (Holmes). He is going to be out for the remainder of the season. It’s a Lisfranc injury that’s going to require surgery. We expect him to make a full recovery, but he will be lost for the rest of the season. Obviously, that’s a big loss for us. Santonio is one of the top receivers in the game and it is a big loss. With that comes opportunity for other guys to step up. I believe as a football team, especially after this performance last week, obviously disappointing, we disappointed ourselves, and we disappointed our fans. I think our guys are going to step up and I think you’re going to see improvement in our football team, despite the loss of Santonio. Obviously, it’s something we wish didn’t happen to one of our best players, but that’s unfortunately part of this business.”

On how the team can bounce back from injuries to Santonio Holmes and Darrelle Revis:

“We do have to rally around each other, for sure. A very similar situation happened in 2009. Obviously it’s a different team right now, but in 2009 when we lost, I believe back-to-back, Kris Jenkins and Leon Washington. It does check the resolve of your team, but that’s one of our strengths. Again, it’s unfortunate, but that’s what happens.”

On his message to the team on facing a Houston team regarding as one the NFL’s best teams:

“I think we have to get better. We can’t worry about who we play. The fact that we’re playing the team that is regarded as the best team in the National Football League, we have to improve ourselves. We have to go back and look at our football team first and we’re trying to do what we’re asking ourselves before we actually get into really game plan specifics against Houston. That’s where the concerns are initially and how we’re going to improve as a football team.”

Newest cornerback Aaron Berry had this to say:

On how it feels to be with the Jets:

“It’s a blessing. They gave me a second opportunity that a lot of people don’t get. I plan to take full advantage of it and do what I can to help this team win some games.”

On his first conversation with Coach Ryan:

“He pretty much told me he’s a guy that gives people second chances. He feels like everybody deserves a second chance. He just wants me to come in here and respect everybody in the locker room and just be disciplined. If they take me in, then I won’t make the same mistake as I did before. I’m just going to take that in and like I said before, I’m blessed to be here and thankful that they gave me a second chance.”

On if he’s excited to reconnect with Coach Cavanaugh:

“Oh yeah, most definitely. He was there when I played my freshman year (at Pittsburgh), so we have a good relationship. (He’s a) great guy. I’m blessed that he gave a good word on me.”

Defensive Tackle Mike DeVito:

On how much of playing defense is a mindset:

“It’s all mindset. You have to go out there fired up. Even if you make a mistake, if you’re going out there 100 MPH (and) you’re knocking guys back. Nine times out of 10, it’s going to turn out well.”

On bouncing back from the loss on Sunday:

“It’s a family deal. It’s a team deal. We have to come together. We have to rally behind each other and we have to go out there and play for each other, pick each other up, get excited when guys make good plays and get back to doing what we do.”

On the Houston Texans:

“They’re a great football team. They can do a lot of stuff. (They have) a great running attack. It can be a long day if we don’t stop the run. We recognize that. We’ll focus on that and we’ll get it done.”

Newly acquired Wide Receiver Jason Hill

On how long it will take to pick up the offense:

“It takes some time, but we’re game planning, so it’s not like I have to learn the whole playbook right now. My plays, I don’t know how much I’ll play (or) if I’ll play this week, but I plan to. I’m going to stay up all night learning the playbook and we’ll see what comes.”

On whether he tried out for the Jets:

“No, I was actually in New Orleans; I was working out with (the) Saints. I got a call from my agent, (who said), “Stop that workout there,” and I got here as soon as possible.”

On how he’ll be used in this offense:

“We’ll see. I don’t think it’s really up to me. It’s up to the coaches and what they see from me the next couple (of) days in practice. They’ll determine that. I don’t determine that. I just try to do my job and make my plays.”

Wide Receiver Stephen Hill

On if he has talked to Santonio Holmes since his injury…

“Yeah, definitely.  I talk to him, really, everyday.  He was just really putting it into my head, “It’s time for you all to step up.” Whoever’s going to step up and do the things that he brought to the table the last (three) years he was here. So he’s making sure he’s stays not just in my head, but other people’s heads, other wide receivers also.”

On how much a big pass would help the confidence of the offense…

“It would help us out a lot.  Big runs also, just big explosive plays are going to help out.  Anything that we can get from Coach Sparano, whatever he puts out there, we just have to go out there and execute it.”  Coach Sparano’s doing a great job with doing that, especially from this week, I saw (the game plan and) it looks like we have something good (in it). Hopefully things will (work out).”

On the confidence of the offense:

“The confidence is always up.  You never see anybody down. Of course we were disappointed, but you never see anybody down in the building or anything. Everybody’s up, everybody’s ready to play. Now that we saw the game film it’s behind us and now we’re starting to move on.”
