Saturday May 12, 2012 was all about Girl Power, as Habitat for Humanity-New York City was able to honor National Women Build Week thanks to help from author and television personality Julie Edelman, aka, ‘The Accidental Housewife’ and Teresa Edwards, five-time Olympian and WNBA Legend coach and player.
Edelman and Edwards joined local volunteers and Lowe’s Heroes all gathered to paint and garden at the New York City Housing Authority’s (NYCHA) Youth Chorus center at Taft Houses, as the two stars brought an enthusiasm and passion to the day that quickly spread to all the volunteers.
Julie and Theresa both got their hands dirty and were able to show their individual creativity during the course of the day. Edwards, who once played for the Minnesota Lynx during the 2003 and 2004 seasons, was a member of the 1987 gold medal winning USA Women’s Pan American Team in Indiana.
Representing the WNBA Cares program, Theresa was a part of painting a mural by the garden area. WNBA Cares is a program that improves the quality of life for all people, the community relations initiative has been in existence for 16 seasons and counting, as the league and the players do a great job of giving back.
Helping to inspire the volunteers was the NYCHA Youth Chorus, who sang several uplifting songs, including a rendition of ‘I Smile’ by Kirk Franklin. The Brush With Kindness event was a part of a nationwide initiative of Habitat for Humanity’s Women Build program developed in partnership with Lowe’s.
Lowe’s, underwriter of Habitat’s Women Build, has been a longtime supporter of the program since 2004.
