Yankees sunk in seventh in Game Three of ALDS: 5-4

The New York Yankees were sunk in the seventh inning by the Detroit Tigers, as the Bombers fell by a final of 5-4 in Game Three of the ALDS on Monday night. Delmon Young hit a homer in the bottom of the seventh to help lead the Detroit offense.

On the hill, it was the Tigers-ace Justin Verlander who prevailed…striking out 11 batters, giving up six hits and four runs in a fine start for Detroit. Making it a close game yet again was closer Jose Valverde.

As for the Bombers, starter C.C. Sabathia tossed 5.1 innings, giving up seven runs, four hits and striking out three batters. Taking the loss for the Yankees was relief pitcher Rafael Soriano who gave up the homer to Young in the bottom of the seventh.

Leading the New York offense was both Brett Gardner and Derek Jeter, who both recorded two hits each.  Gardner edged his teammate, by driving in two of the four Yankees’ runs.

Now with the season on the brink, the Bombers will turn the ball over to starter A.J. Burnett in Game Four on Tuesday night. Burnett has not had the season the Yankees had hoped for when they signed him, compiling an 11-11 record, while also holding a 5.15 ERA.

Detroit will counter with Rick Porcello (14-9, 4.75 ERA) to capture the finale in the best-of-five series. The first pitch for Game Four is slated for 8:37 p.m. with the game slated to air on the TBS network.
