New York Yankees rocked by Red Sox: 9-5

In Game Two of the rivalry and the ‘Battle of First Place’ the Boston Red Sox (83-52) bopped the New York Yankees (81-53) by a final score of 9-5 on Wednesday night. The Sox have now regained their lead in the American League East, as putting the icing on the victory for Boston-was their captain Jason Varitek.

‘Tek’ as he is known to his teammates, had a 2-for-4 day at the dish along with a home run (10) in the bottom of the eighth inning-that propelled his team to the victory.

As for the Yankees, the struggles for starter Phil Hughes (L, 4-5) continues his struggles in his starts on the hill. The righty tossed 5.2 innings giving up eight hits, six runs, and four strikeouts in taking the loss against Boston.

Leading the way for the Yankees offense, was their shortstop and captain Derek Jeter, who had a 2-for-3 day at the dish with an RBI. Jeter no moves into 20th place all-time in MLB’s hit list, moving past Craig Biggio, as the Yankees captain now has 3.061 hits.

The series concludes on Thursday, as another Yankees’ starter is looking to solve his problems on the hill. It’ll be A.J. Burnett (9-11, 5.31 ERA) taking on Jon Lester (14-6, 3.09 ERA).  First pitch is slated for 7:10 p.m.
