Islanders v Flyers 1/20/14

Here are some notes as the New York Islanders (19-24-7) are playing host to the Philadelphia Flyers (25-19-5) in NHL action at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

LAST GAME:

1/18/14: NYI 4 at PHI 6

John TavaresCal ClutterbuckBrock Nelson and Brian Strait scored for the Islanders in the first two frames, but the Flyers scored three third-period goals to take the win.

TONIGHT’S MATCHUP

The Islanders and Philadelphia Flyers complete their four-game season series this afternoon with the second game of their home-and- home set. Philadelphia has won all three meetings this season.

TEAM NOTES:

NHL Scoring Race: John Tavares is tied for second in NHL scoring with 58 points (22g/36a). Kyle Okposo is tied for 15th in the league with 47 points (19g/28a).

Back To NY: The Islanders went 4-2-0 on their six-game road trip. The Isles have ten games remaining before the Olympic break and nine of them are in the New York area.

Back-To-Backs: The Islanders open their 12th set of back-to-back games today against the Flyers. They are 5-6-0 on the front end, and 4-5-2 on the back-end of back-to-backs this season. The club will total 16 back-to-back sets this season.

Poulin’s Run: Kevin Poulin has won five-of-seven games since taking over starting duties for Evgeni Nabokov, who suffered an injury on Jan. 6.

de Haan: Rookie defenseman Calvin de Haan saw his five-game point streak (1g/6a) come to a close Thursday in Tampa Bay. Prior to the start of that streak, de Haan had not recorded an NHL point.

Series Wrap Up: The Isles and Flyers wrap up their season series this afternoon. The Flyers lead the series three games to none. 

Metropolitan Division: The Islanders play the second of four straight games against the Metropolitan division. Six of their next eight games are against Metro division opponents.

Visnovsky Practices: Lubomir Visnovsky practiced with the team for the first time since suffering a concussion on Oct. 19.

Returning Home: After six straight on the road, the Islanders play their next seven games in New York and on Long Island.

Kyle Okposo – 9 goals shy of 100

The Islanders/Flyers game is set to air on the MSG Plus Network, with face-off scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
